Own Your art, Run Your Business
For a working artist/performer - whether you’re an actor, singer, dancer, model, or creative of any kind - learning how to own your art and run your business in this post-2020 industry requires far more than talent alone.
The rules have changed. Yet again.
Let’s get the obvious out of the way:
No, it’s not fair. (Nepo, beauty, money access, etc)
Yes, there’s gatekeeping.
Yes, the market is oversaturated.
Those are real challenges. But at a certain point, and nobody likes hearing this, you have to stop obsessing over the hand you were dealt and start learning how to play the game as it exists. Recently, I posted two TikTok videos about Michelle Pfeiffer and other ladies whose circumstances were obstacles they overcame. There are far too many people who have come into success with far less and managed to make a career for themselves despite all the odds.
Talent alone is no longer enough.
Building a sustainable career as a working artist - one with real infrastructure and longevity - requires three things:
